The Women Who Money Team and their families use a variety of cell phone carriers. We’ve researched and used MVNO’s (Mobile Virtual Network Operators) and some of us still contract with the “Big 4” services (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint.) Today’s UNREAL Mobile review comes from Vicki, co-founder of Women Who Money and founder of Make Smarter Decisions.
Vicki has used several different MVNO’s over the last seven years, and she loves the fact that you can shop for cell service so easily now. Vicki has saved thousands of dollars on cell phone bills, and she’s on a mission to help others save money too!
We hope highlighting our experiences with these services will help you make better decisions about what cell service is best for you and your family. If there is a cell phone service you’d like us to review, please contact us or leave a note in the comments. We’d be happy to answer any questions you have!
An Overview of UNREAL Mobile
I was recently contacted by a representative of UNREAL Mobile about reviewing their cell phone service. I agreed because I’m always excited to give another cell service a try. UNREAL Mobile provided me with a phone and a month of service, but all of the comments and opinions in this review are my own.
What is UNREAL Mobile?
UNREAL Mobile is a low-cost “premium” service launched earlier this year by the “freemium” MVNO cell service, FreedomPop. UNREAL Mobile runs off the Sprint CDMA network and recently expanded by partnering with AT&T. That means if you get decent coverage using either Sprint or AT&T (or their low-cost MVNO’s), you now have another option.
On UNREAL Mobile – if you have the Sprint (CDMA) service – talk and text use a traditional network signal. The GSM SIM cards that run off the AT&T network use VoIP for calls & texts. The GSM mobile plans require the UNREAL Mobile app running on Android 4.1 or higher or iOS 8.2 or higher (which you are reminded of before purchase.)
Some people might not like using VoIP, but most people find that it isn’t a big issue at all – especially when they consider what they are saving using an UNREAL Mobile plan.
You have the option to purchase a phone from UNREAL Mobile or purchase a SIM card and bring your own unlocked phone. You can also purchase SIM cards at retailers including Target and Best Buy. The Best Buy offer comes out to less than $7/month for unlimited talk, text, and 1 GB of data!
The Plans UNREAL Mobile Offers
UNREAL Mobile offers very competitive rates on their no-contract plans. They have inexpensive and transparent pricing, and all plans come with a 30-day money back guarantee.
For $10 per month, you get unlimited talk, text, and 1 GB of high-speed LTE data. (*As with all mobile plans, if you go over your high-speed data allowance, you get unlimited slower 2G data.)
- For $15, you get unlimited talk, text, and 2GB of LTE data
- For $20, you get unlimited talk, text, and 3 GB of LTE data
- $30, will get you unlimited talk, text, and 5 GB of LTE data
- $40, gets you unlimited talk, text, and 10GB of LTE data
UNREAL Mobile is offering a great deal right now (subject to change to another deal.) If you buy a GSM SIM from them for $9.99 and bring your own unlocked GSM phone, you get a free one month trial of UNREAL Mobile with unlimited talk, text, and 5 GB of LTE. A bonus? Free shipping on the SIM card. You can find deals (including phones) here.
I haven’t been able to find another plan with unlimited talk, text, and 1 GB of LTE data for $10. If you know of another option, please leave it in the comments.
The Special Features UNREAL Mobile Offers
An UNREAL Mobile account has other important features including encryption and privacy, so you can search anonymously online without being tracked. You can also enable theIR ad blocker so you won’t have to see unwanted ads.
If it bothers you to lose unused data on your plan, UNREAL Mobile rolls over a portion of remaining data each month (with overall limits.) Another great feature is that you can share high-speed data with your friends and use your service across any of your devices.
You can pay for UNREAL Mobile service online with a credit card or PayPal, and you can easily manage your account from any of your electronic devices.
My UNREAL Mobile Review
I’ve been using the UNREAL Mobile phone and service for over three weeks. I am using a phone with Sprint service, and I was concerned I’d struggle to get service.
I’ve traveled across New York state (upstate) with the phone, and I haven’t been without service at all. I was able to make calls without them dropping, and I sent texts with no issues whatsoever.
The only issue I did have was using data while on the campus of the school where I work. The school is in a rural setting near the mountains, and although I could call and send texts when I was there, the ability to use data was spotty – sometimes it worked, and other times it didn’t. But I don’t believe this had anything to do with UNREAL Mobile. My personal phone is with Total Wireless (a Verizon MVNO), and it gets spotty service there as well.
My parents and my brother are currently using a different AT&T MVNO, and I’ve already talked to them about UNREAL Mobile. They are using a plan with unlimited talk, text, and 1 GB of data and they are each paying $20 a month. They have unlocked GSM phones, and they could cut their cell phone bill in half by switching. I am definitely recommending they give UNREAL Mobile a try! Why wouldn’t they?
Is UNREAL Mobile Worth the Savings?
Cell phone service can be a considerable expense in your monthly budget. That’s why it’s important to take time to learn about low-cost options. If you spend a lot of time on WIFI and if you have good Sprint or AT&T coverage, you might be able to get your cell phone bill down to $10 a month using UNREAL Mobile. And still receiving 1 GB of LTE data!
I’d suggest you take the time to check your current data usage if you believe you need unlimited data. You might be surprised at what you really use. If you could save hundreds – or even thousands of dollars – a year, it will be worth the time you spent checking your usage!
If you’re still using an expensive cell phone plan and you want to cut costs, consider an MVNO like UNREAL Mobile. Should you have questions on cell phone service or about UNREAL Mobile, feel free to post them here. If I don’t know the answers, I will find the answers or get in touch with my contacts and get them for you.
